The Evolution of a Cult tends to be marked by specific steps.

1. The Big Idea

A charismatic leader or figureheads propose a new and transcendent idea offering a panacea for struggling players.

Thus we find ourselves. Preparations are underway to challenge the establishment down in Brisbane. The gunships are circling. Signs of trouble appear from the sidelines. An isolated player, naked, anxious, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET written on his body as a statement, has stumbled from the field and is taken aside in secrecy towards an inconclusive loan stint in county cricket.

Do you recall the start, when the world was still young? The era of early Bazball, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Initial Adoration

Cult leaders offer a reboot, optimism ahead, support, redemption among a group with shared faith in the philosophy.

How did it feel initially? A team united basking in glory. Body art. Forearms. Focus. Peak performance vibes. Of course, The team insist it’s not a real term, ironically as it’s denied, what did we see?

However, everyone understands what it is. It’s the batsman executing a stroke so depraved it has to be pixelated. It’s the excitement of the captain at his peak, an expression conveying: focused titan, strong features, hair woven from beaver hide, genuinely raw you half-expect to look down and find him positioned at mid-off bare-chested embracing nature.

It’s Ben Duckett still being allowed to talk in press conferences, resembling a happy little woodland creature formally attired, expressing thoughts like we are actively deconstructing the orange. Certainly, the atmosphere, for a significant period, was uplifting.

3. The Growth Phase

Development stage. Togetherness strengthened via memorization of the cult’s slogans. These principles are often illogical to prove commitment.

Is it just me? The reaction, the fury, the sense of betrayal after the first Ashes Test defeat appears excessive, overdone. The performance was poor on the field, as they often do in Australia. They were savaged while bowling for a couple of hours as the bowling and captaincy fell apart, outplayed by the batsman playing aggressively but smarter, responsive to the situation, a man playing with a kind of light around him.

And now we have this the criticism, the frustration, the perception of the team as a kind of abomination. The consensus is that defeat must be total, they should be dismantled, to be cleansed, obliterated, overwhelmed by the vengeful purity of the bowler’s action, the conventional tactics of the veteran, seen enjoying achievements with a bashful smile as if receiving a nice new fishing rod. What will this do to them?

4. External Conflict

Issues emerge from failures in the plan. Yet, mistakes are denied. It begins to thrive on anger towards critics.

Ultimately, a few days before from the second Test, we’ve entered a critical juncture in the journey of this approach. Victory is possible in the next Test in a blur of adrenal disruption. Alternatively, failure may follow. In case of defeat it seems we may see the decline.

Before that happens, there are two things worth saying on the topic. In the past, at the start, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article suggesting Bazball was a cult. There was outrage, which demonstrated as it’s known a method to show that it’s not a closed group is if supporters send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages objecting to the questioning of its truths.

The developments lately are fascinating. It seems that hating Bazball has now become the cult. Social media is furious, disappointed commentators, shots of angry middle-aged followers overseas missing out on play, like a room full of timeshare owners seeking justice.

On the other hand, exists the larger scene of the opponent’s mixed more culturally hard-wired exasperation with the aggressive tourists, stating, the methods you value and have developed as part of your identity from others, well, it’s all a bit of a gag in the end old boy.

And this is the real point. All movements are similar. The approach was a phenomenon as the game has its own culture. Or rather, the team has long been exclusive, a clique, a garden party, an insular community with centuries of opaque and ritualistic cult history defining it. Historically, this was where entry is limited. It’s the British pastime of England, the pioneering brand. And notably, the country is a phenomenon, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a place that literally still has a king.

The team have been sealed up in this environment from a young age. Attempting to break free, to build a better atmosphere, they are just repeating their upbringing, creating another a bubble, an exclusive group, but doing it this time with a new team and a coach promoting authenticity provided you conform.

Stay present. Confront risks. Despite efforts, you remain stuck.
